What is our Project?

A pedagogically guided initiative creating calm spaces for families.

Project Retzlaff is developed and supported by professionals with a background in education and child development. Our work is grounded in an understanding of how children process sensory input, regulate emotions and develop across different stages of growth.

Our goal is to accompany children through various developmental phases by providing intentionally designed sound environments — especially during moments of rest and transition, such as bedtime.

We do not view sound as mere background noise, but as part of the environment that directly influences the developing nervous system.

Our Approach:

Developmental awareness

Children process sensory input differently depending on age. Infants are particularly sensitive to abrupt stimuli, while toddlers gradually learn to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant input. Our sounds are structured with these developmental differences in mind.

Acoustic stability

All audio is designed to remain steady and balanced — without sudden volume shifts or abrupt frequency changes. A consistent sound structure reduces unnecessary activation of the nervous system.

Sensory reduction

In a world of constant stimulation, we intentionally create simplified auditory spaces — free from dramatic effects, layered complexity or excessive dynamics.

Why This Matters?

Sleep plays a crucial role in healthy child development.

During sleep, the brain processes daily experiences, consolidates memory and regulates emotional input. Especially in early developmental stages, sufficient and stable sleep is essential for:

  1. neural connectivity
  2. language development
  3. emotional regulation
  4. stress recovery

Unpredictable or fluctuating auditory stimuli can activate the nervous system and contribute to micro-arousals — even when a child appears to remain asleep.

Our sound design takes these principles into account. We carefully consider frequency balance, controlled dynamics and acoustic consistency to create a stable auditory environment.

Not all freely available sleep sounds are developed with developmental science in mind. Many rely on dramatic effects or variable sound patterns that may be engaging, but are not necessarily supportive of a child’s regulatory needs.

Project Retzlaff follows a different path:
intentional, reduced and pedagogically informed.

We do not promise miracles.
We provide supportive conditions.
